Introduction – Vox-pops from the case studies. Nick Avery, a GP and Homeopath, has taken an interest in the relationship between hormones and women’s health problems. He describes how difficult it is to treat hormone problems because even if you have a blood test progesterone and oestrogen vary widely within the normal range. Case Study 1 – We hear from Anne, who had been treated extensively with hormones by her doctor to try and combat painful and almost continuous periods. Case Study 2 – Annette had been trying to have a baby for over a year before she was diagnosed as experiencing early menopause. Case Study 3 – Dr. Marilyn Glenville is a nutritionist who provides a natural alternative for people not wanting to go on HRT. Case Study 4 – Scilla, however, approached the menopause another way under the supervision of zero balancing therapist, John Hamwee.
Training Specialization: Women’s Fitness
Until recently (the last decade or so) fitness experts believed that men and women could be trained the same. However, research over the last few years has shown that women are in need of different fitness training protocols. They began to see topics such as menopause, pregnancy and pelvic health were all topics that require specific attention.
With the emergence of this information, a variety of organizations and educational programs have popped up to try and fill in knowledge gap regarding fitness training for women. A few of these stand out as leaders in this segment of the industry.
One such organization, the Women’s Health Foundation (WHF), believes that women need individual attention. WHF mission is to improve all women’s pelvic health and wellness by being proactive in current research, serving as a national resource on female pelvic health, and developing education programs related to pelvic health. WHF has already, through a partnership with individuals at the Loyola University Medical Center, found that specific exercise techniques (specifically called the “Total Control Program” through WHF) have been effective in improving incontinence and bladder control during both the initial and long term (one year after research trial) follow up.
Another organization leading the way in female health is Healthy Moms (HM). HM is dedicated to enhancing the well being of women before, during, and after pregnancy. In addition to keeping “moms healthy”, HM provides various resources for health and wellness professionals that care for women throughout pregnancy. One of the resources they provide is their “Healthy Moms Advanced Perinatal Fitness Instructor Training Course”. This program helps prepare fitness professionals for creating specific programs that can meet the needs females that are pregnant from the first trimester to delivery.
In addition to their advanced perinatal course, they also provide a variety of other useful programs and information. Areas such as on-site seminars, perinatal specific classes offered at various locations throughout the country, & free tips, advice and articles on their website, are all provided to help those either preparing for pregnancy or in pregnancy be as ready for each stage as possible.
Colleges throughout the country are also beginning to see the importance of women’s health training. Specifically they are offering an ONLINE female fitness/wellness education program titled “Women’s Exercise Training and Wellness”. School’s involved in offering this program include:
*Chicago State University
*State College of Florida
*University of Southern Mississippi
*Washington State University
The goal of this program is to educate an individual in how to establish an exercise program specific to women’s needs. The program covers topics such as musculoskeletal and functional anatomy of the female pelvis, the hormonal/endocrine system, bone density, pre and postpartum fitness, & breast, ovary and uterine cancers.
It’s important, with how many women make up part of your total membership/client base, that you have the skills necessary to properly train them. By utilizing the above mentioned resources, you will guarantee your female clients better results.

We’ve all been there. We embark, with great enthusiasm, on a fitness program to finally get in shape. Yet, at some point, during this seeming endless journey, our motivation fades, our schedules don’t seem to allow the “me” time we first imagined; our results flatten and we become stagnant with our fitness program. The wedding, class reunion, or great summer vacation which presented the catalyst for this fitness endeavor has come and gone and the last thing we feel like doing is climbing aboard that treadmill or elliptical trainer! Now what?
Personal trainers are a great source of motivation and support. If you feel like you are flagging due to the over stresses of your workout, or if it is the opposite and you are losing your way with the fitness regime then consult your personal trainer. You may simply need a reinvigoration of your program, something that can simply be accomplished by speaking with your trainer. It is always advised that you seek expert advice such as your local GP as well as your personal trainer to when changing your lifestyle in a dramatic way.
If you are not satisfied with your shape, fitness or weight or frustrated with a lack of progress then it becomes a must for you to hire a personal trainer. If you are getting confused with the eating habits that you should avoid or if you are struggling with the equipment and information out there and wasting your hard earned money on various services and products then personal trainer is no doubt the best choice for you.
He or she should have friendly personality. It is important that you feel comfortable with your trainer, as then only you can make the sessions fun and exciting. Your personal trainer should be honest with you and shall keep you informed about your fitness goals. Certifications by the standard institutions are something which should be with your physical trainers. There are some states that hands out license to personal trainers, in case your state does the same then you should look only for licensed. Willingness to help by personal trainers should be there, regardless of the degree of improvement that you need.
